How much does a $25,000 California contractor license bond cost?
Surety bonds
You pay a premium, which is a small fraction of the $25,000 bond amount, and the exact figure depends on the surety's underwriting of you: the owner's personal credit, the license history, any prior bond claims, and the term you buy. We don't publish a rate because it varies by applicant and by surety, and a number that is right for one plumber is wrong for the next.
What is fixed is the bond amount (penal sum): $25,000 is the most the surety will pay on claims against the bond, not what you pay for it. A quote states the premium before you commit, usually for a one- or multi-year term, and the bond is then filed with CSLB (the surety usually files it; CSLB must receive it within 90 days of the effective date).
If your credit is strong, expect a quick quote at the low end of the surety's range. If it is weaker, expect a higher premium rather than a decline in most cases, though approval is never guaranteed. Request a quote and the surety's price comes back with the application.
